SANFORD ZOO, Ark.
— Zoos around the world continue to grapple with the health risks posed by a new virus, and one that’s killing more than half of the animals in their care.
In addition to the pandemic, more than a million people worldwide have contracted the coronavirus.
Some of the top ten zoos are in the United States, and two are in Europe.
Here are the 10 best zoo locations around the globe, according to the latest research by the nonprofit conservation group Zoo Watch.
The Great Plains Zoo, which opened in 1996, has the highest average daily visitor numbers in the country.
The zoo has an average daily attendance of 5,800, making it one of the highest in the nation.
The city of Denver also has a zoo, but the average attendance is 2,500.
At the zoo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the average daily visitors are 1,800 and the zoo average daily animal attendance is 1,200.
The zoo is also one of only two facilities in the U.S. to have a capacity of 20,000 animals.
The other is the zoo at the University of California, Davis.
In the southern French Alps, the Biodiversity Institute at Le Bourget is home to more than 300 species of wildlife.
The animals are protected under French law and live in a wildlife preserve.
The zoo also has one of its largest collections of rare animals, including a 1,000-year-old ostrich and a 1.5-million-year old elephant.
The facility has a population of more than 2,300 animals.
The Cincinnati Zoo is one of many zoos that have lost significant numbers of animals to the virus.
The Cincinnati Zoo has lost more than 1,500 animals to illness and has no staff left to care for them.
The animals at the zoo are housed in separate enclosures that are heated to around 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
The only other zoo in the northern U.K. to lose animals to coronaviruses is the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
There, the loss of a few animals has forced the zoo to relocate to a different building.
The New York Zoo has the lowest average daily zoo attendance of any zoo in America.
The average daily average attendance of about 5,000 visitors is about one-third of the zoo’s average daily number.
